Marijuana. Cannabis. Weed.
Whatever you call it, it’s always in the news, but how much do you actually know about it?
Here, we’ve got some interesting facts about marijuana to share, so you can know more! From Shakespeare to sativa, it’s all here — keep reading to get the lowdown on cannabis, right here.
There Are Three Main Varieties…
There are three primary types of cannabis: sativa, indica, and ruderalis.
Sativa and indica are the two most well-known types of cannabis, and they both have different effects on the user. Sativa is associated more with daytime use, as it gives you a ‘head high’ — increased energy, alertness, and creativity.
In comparison, indica is associated more with night use. It gives more of a ‘body high’; it makes users feel more relaxed and can offer pain relief in addition.
What about ruderalis? It’s a type of cannabis that grows wild and sits somewhere between sativa and indica.
Of course, there are plenty of hybrid marijuana strains, too, thanks to cross-breeding between different varieties, and you can check out the different strains on sites like Cannibros.
…But Thousands of Slang Names
What do you call it?
As well as calling it ‘cannabis’ or ‘marijuana’, words to describe the drug include ‘weed’, ‘ganja’, ‘pot’, ‘grass’, ‘bud’ and ‘Mary Jane’.
Various strains have different names too, from Purple Haze to UK Cheese to Wedding Cake.
Genders React Differently
Something you might not know is that men and women react to cannabis differently. One study found that while women are more sensitive to marijuana, they build up a tolerance faster than men.
In contrast, men are more likely to get the ‘munchies’. However, everyone will have different reactions to marijuana — there are plenty of other factors, from age to weight, that go into it.
Shakespeare Smoked
Believe it or not, it’s thought that the Bard himself enjoyed the occasional smoke.
In his garden, four clay tobacco pipes were found. Inside them was marijuana residue. Meanwhile, there was a mention of the substance in one of Shakespeare’s sonnets.
Maybe in an early draft of Romeo and Juliet, the two bonded over a joint?
The Most Popular Drug
Weed is the most popular drug in the world, and in the US alone, over 43 million people have used it in the last year — this makes it comfortably the most-used illegal drug in the country.
There are varying reasons for this. It’s becoming more socially acceptable, and even legal in some states and other international jurisdictions, and, while not without risk, is unquestionably safer than many other illegal drugs.
