We hear every year that there are 1 Million students taking the UPSC examination. But does it really come to your mind that all are real competition or just filling the seats.
In this article, I am going to talk about the real competition in the UPSC examination. UPSC conducts Civil Services Examination to fill almost 1000 posts every year. But Surprisingly it receives almost 10 Lakh applications every year.
Out of which some odd 10000 students reach to the second level of the examination. For those who don’t know, UPSC has three levels of examination. Prelims, Mains and Interview.
Out of these 10000 qualified students, odd 3000 students clear the second level of the examination. And, finally, the interview is conducted.
IAS interview questions are also considered very tough. And, almost 2000 students get rejected in IAS interview as well.
Readout some of the trickiest questions ever asked in an IAS interview.

But why does the UPSC receive so much application and what happens to the rest of the people? Let us find the reasons today.
Half of the competition is just numbers
You won’t believe it but it’s true. Half of the students turn for the examination even after filling the application fee. Some people fill the form just for the sake of it.
I personally know some people who filled the UPSC application form but never went for the examination.
So if you are a serious candidate and scared of the competition then you should not. These numbers are just faxed to scare you.
Family Pressure
You believe it or not but it’s true. Many students fill the application form because of their family pressure. This happens usually in states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
In these two states, the UPSC exam is the most sacred exam to take and if you clear it then you are treated like not less than God.
Many families don’t realize that their kids don’t want to prepare for UPSC exams. But, they don’t have a choice.
So if your family lets you choose what you want to study in your life then you are among the luckiest students.
Real Competition
So you might be wondering what is the real competition in the Civil Services examination.
In my opinion and research, real competition is among 1 Lakh students who sincerely take this exam and study for it.
Though you might disagree with me on this. However, I’ve been writing about the IAS examination field for the last 6 years and have followed the IAS examination quite closely.
I hope that this article is helpful and cleared some of your doubts about UPSC competition.
I also want to share one more key insight about the UPSC examination that it’s not that tough. You may have heard that it is impossible to clear the exam.
Clearing UPSC is more about strategy and attitude than any other thing. Learn to make a character out of yourself that suits the UPSC then nobody will be able to stop you from becoming an IAS officer.
