Life in Como as an expat

February 21, 2022 by Andrea Fonseka

Located in the North of Italy, Como has got a good number of well-known Italian tourist attractions. No matter the fact it may not be everyone’s first pick, this city has a lot to give that you will not find anywhere else. If you are fond of the lake, there are several homes for sale in Lake Como Italy, a peaceful and incredibly charming area for both expats and locals. This large Alpine Lake has a lot of vacation cottages and houses along its shores, making it a great place to get away from the city. If you’re thinking about moving abroad, there are many factors to be considered. Como has many positive aspects for expats that can surely contribute to helping you make your final decision.

Weather

About the weather, here temperature is comparable to that of the rest of the northern area. Although, the closeness to the lake contributes to maintain it a little cooler. In winter, it is very common to have a lot of snow, while in summer the temperatures hover around 20 degrees.

Good connections

Como has reliable connections to other Italian towns in the region. Lombardy is home to Milan, Brescia, and Bergamo, among the most popular cities of the area. Moreover, for those who love skiing, the Alps are close to Como. In addition, other European destinations are easily accessible for short vacations, for example, it is also easy to reach Switzerland for a weekend getaway. Como presents also a good public transportation system, which includes ferries over Lake Como.

Safety

Because of its small population and its position on the coast of the lake, Como has a very low crime rate. It is a safe place to walk alone, no matter the time of the day. During the holiday season, it tends to get more crowded with tourists, but it is still a very safe area for living.

Cuisine

Como boasts a great food quality, in fact Italy is worldwide famous for its delightful cuisine. Lombardy region has its own typical dishes that, of course, you can find in Como. Among them, polenta and shellfish are quite popular in this specific area. Clearly, the other Italian delicacies are also easy to find and enjoy. Moreover, wine lovers can meet and taste great options to pair with the delicious food.

The cost of living

In comparison to other Italian locations, the cost of living near Lake Como is relatively high. This is primarily due to its geographic position and the lifestyle that its residents have developed during the last decades. Como is a high-end destination, and the expense of living reflects this, even though the cost of living depends on the lifestyle you want to pursuit.

The expats community

If you assume that the expat population is smaller than in southern Italy you are right. However, Como and the lake have a sizable community of foreigners. It is chosen as a destination by expats who can count on a certain degree of income and by those who are willing to enjoy a lifestyle focused on the outdoors. If this description fits you, then you will not have problems in finding like-minded expats.
