With open-plan living being so popular, our houses don’t often have a small, cozy space that we can retreat to. A snug room, called so because of its snuggly features, can be used by the whole family. It’s a place kids can chill out and watch TV, where teens can sit and listen to music, and where parents can relax in the evening when the kids are in bed. Here’s how to create the perfect snug room.
Create Comfort
To gain that cozy and welcoming feel, think about having a thick carpet on the floor. Or a luxurious pile rug to cover hardwood floors. Curtains rather than blinds help to give a welcoming feel and also absorb any noise. Have a basket full of blankets so that you can easily grab one to curl up under. The aim is to make this space as relaxed as possible in contrast to other areas of the home.
Reading Nook
If you are retreating to this space to relax, then put in some bookshelves and make a mini library. Have all your books on hand so that when it comes to the evening, you can sit down and reach for a book with a glass of wine in hand. You could get built-in bookshelves made, or just put a couple of shelves up on a wall depending on what you have room for.
Comfy Seating
Create a comfy space for the whole family. As well as a couch, why not add a giant bean bag or two for the kids to chill out on. That means if you are all using the room at the same time then you don’t have to be cramped and can have your own space.
Ambient Lighting
Have low-level side lighting to create that warm, snug feel in the room. Make sure any lighting is on a dimmable switch so that you can have it lighter if reading or darker if watching TV in the evening. Ceiling spotlights can sometimes be too dazzling, so go for more ambient side lighting instead.
Calm Color
To make this space as relaxing as possible, choose to decorate it in a calming color. The color of a room can definitely affect your mood, so choose something that has a dark hue such as greens, greys, or blues. This can also be reflected in what color couch and cushions you go for. Choose colors that complement each other rather than stark, contrasting colors.
Feature Fireplace
There’s nothing better than curling up next to a real log fire. Having a fire in your snug room will be the ultimate way to make it cozy and warm. If you don’t already have a fireplace in the room, then there are some great electric alternatives out there that can create the same effect. Put one in the corner of your snug to give that welcoming homey feel.
Whether you are creating a snug space just for you, or for the use of the whole family, there are some great ways to make a cozy, warm snug room in your home.
