How Do Dry Herb Vaporizers Work?

Over 150 million people around the world use marijuana. The best thing about marijuana is that you can take it in a variety of different ways.

That is, you can enjoy its benefits through whatever means you’re comfortable with. One of the most innovative and effective ways of cannabis intake is through dry herb vaporizers.

But what are dry herb vaporizers and how exactly do they work?

That’s what we’re here to look at today. Read on to find out about the benefits and inner mechanics of dry herb vaporizers.

What are Dry Herb Vaporizers?

Dry herb vaporizers are devices that heat up dry cannabis leaves to create a gas that contains plant material and provides you with its benefits.

Many people are familiar with oil-based vaporizers that have a similar effect and mechanic. However, dry herb vaporizers work with dry flowers inserted into the ceramic heating chamber.

Through combustion, the aromas and flavors of the flower are released. The user will breathe those gases in to feel the effects of whatever flower they’re using.

Types of Dry Herb Vaporizers

There are two main types of dry herb vaporizers: desktop and portable.

You’re probably familiar with a portable vaporizer. These often come in the form of vape pens and are extremely compact. They’re great for slipping into your bag and carrying it around for social events.

You can keep this product around the house for small hits here and there. Since they’re so small, portable dry herb vaporizers can only carry a small number of flowers.

This makes them ideal for individual use and can be used with up to three people.

Desktop vaporizers are a little more elaborate. They hook into a power source and require a lot more storage space.

If you’re looking for longer vaping sessions with larger groups of people, a desktop vaporizer might be the move. It holds a lot more herbs and the technology is much more complex than a portable vaporizer.

You can also take bigger hits, making it a good individual tool and an awesome accessory for group sessions.

How Do Dry Herb Vaporizers Work?

So how do these vaporizers work anyway?

Like we mentioned before, vaporizers create vapor clouds by heating up the cannabis flower that’s inserted into the chamber. This can be done in two different methods: combustion and convection.

Conduction involves direct contact when heating up the vaporizer. The heating chamber uses flames through a heating plate to heat up the flower. The cannabis flower is then combusted, creating vapors.

Convection-based vaporizers use oil or liquid to initiate the heating process. Hot air is used to create vapors whenever you take a hit off of your vaporizer. This means convection vaporizers don’t use direct heat.

Different people prefer different vaporizers. Some don’t enjoy conduction-based vaporizers since the direct heat can burn the flower if they aren’t careful.

Burnt flower can produce an unpleasant taste, and conduction-based vapes might scorch the flower in between hits. Some see this as rather wasteful.

Convection dry herb vaporizers don’t use direct heat, so you won’t experience any burnt flavors. This is great for those who like to take their time in between pulls.

It’s worth noting that conduction vaporizers are usually cheaper than convection ones. Each one has different mechanisms that bring you different benefits.

Benefits of Using Dry Herb Vaporizers

There’s a reason why dry herb vaporizers are becoming so popular these days. A big reason is that vaporizers don’t produce carcinogens and other toxic by-products associated with smoking herbs.

Some cite the richer flavor and more authentic cannabis smoking experience associated with dry herb vaporizers as a big draw. Vaporizers also let you experiment with temperatures to get the optimal experience.

Every dry herb, including cannabis flowers, have their optimal burning temperature. Many vaporizers let you tinker with the temperature to find the best setting for combustion.

By playing around with the temperatures, you can more effectively get the results you want. This is hard to do with more conventional smoking methods.

It’s also easier for users to mix and match different flowers, something you can’t do with oil-based vapes. This level of flexibility is what separates dry herbs from their contemporaries.

Dry Herb Vaporizers vs. Other Products

It’s important to distinguish a dry herb vaporizer from a similar marijuana vaporizer. Knowing the differences might help users decide whether or not they want to use dry herb vaporizers.

Oil

We’ve already compared it to oil-based vaporizers. While they look and act similarly, oil-based ones need much higher temperatures to work properly. Dry herb vapes also take less maintenance compared to its oil-based counterparts.

Joints

Dry herb vaporizers are also compared often to joints. The main differences are clear, as one is simpler and more hands-on while the other requires fancier technology.

Dry herb vaporizers are, however, much more discreet. People won’t know exactly what you’re smoking when you whip out your vaporizer as opposed to a joint.

Concentrates

Others prefer THC concentrates as their main smoking method. These concentrates often come in the form of wax.

While they’re highly potent, concentrates are harder to find and produce. This makes dry herb vaporizers a more economical and convenient choice.

The big advantage with concentrates is the lack of odor when you take a hit. They do, however, create much more smoke than dry herb vaporizers. If you’re worried about being discreet, make sure you take that into account.
