Whether you’re upgrading your old system, replacing a faulty system or choosing hot water systems for a new build home, there’s a good chance you’ll be faced with a choice between the different types of hot water systems at least once.
Each of the different types of hot water heaters have different pros and cons, so let’s take a quick look at each, so you can start choosing your best options.
Electric Heaters
Electric hot water systems are the most common choice, but they are also the most expensive to run. That’s because of the cost of electricity. While that might vary based on where you are, and what kind of plan you have, it’s certainly not going to be cheap.
Many people choose to install timers on their hot water systems, so that they automatically shut off when not required. Those who do use off peak electricity to heat their water usually also choose a larger tank, so they can have hot water all day.
Solar Heaters
Solar hot water system use a special type of solar panel known as “collector panels” to heat hot water on your roof or in another elevated position. These panels consist of long tubes of black pipe, which absorb the sun’s heat very well. This is then used in your home.
The only problem with solar hot water systems is that if there’s no sun, you won’t have very warm water, and even when there is, your water won’t get as hot as it would using another type of system.
Gas Heaters
Gas water heaters use natural gas to heat the water you need for your home. This is usually cheaper than electricity and is a reliable way to heat your water.
Some gas water heaters include a large tank – usually 135 litres or larger – but others heat water “on demand.” This can be a benefit because it means you will never run out of hot water!
Heat Pump Heaters
Heat pumps are very clever kinds of hot water systems that extract the heat out of the air to heat your water. It might sound like science fiction, but it works very well in warm climates like Australia!
This is a very efficient way to get the hot water you need, but it can take up more space, and be more difficult and expensive to install.
Need to Make a Choice?
If you need a new hot water system for whatever reason, the best choice is often to contact a professional.
You’ll need a licensed plumber to help install your new hot water system, but they can also give you advice about what type of system is best for your home and your family.
Different types of hot water systems work best for different types of installation, so if you don’t know which one to choose, it’s always a good idea to get the professionals to weigh in!
