Everything You Should Know About Farmhouse Sink Installation

August 19, 2021 by Andrea Fonseka

If you’re planning to remodel your kitchen, the sink installation is a big part of your overall design.

Farmhouse sinks are a popular choice thanks to their large size and beautiful aesthetics, but what’s involved in the installation process?

Read on to discover the details of a farmhouse sink installation, so you’re prepared for this vital step in your kitchen makeover.

Measuring For a Farmhouse Sink Installation

The first and most important step in a kitchen sink installation is measuring for the area. Your countertop will need to be completely cut away to make room since the sink will span across the front area.

Start by measuring the width of the sink, then mark where the rim meets the underside portion of the counter. You’ll also need to record the height of the new kitchen sink at its highest point, which is usually where the front apron is located.

Farmhouse sinks need support underneath, or they need a lower cabinet to hold the weight. Finally, measure the depth of the sink and make sure it won’t stick out from the edge of your countertops so everything is flush.

Supporting the Sink

In a farmhouse sink installation, you’ll need to add supports to hold the weight. This can either be a full-size box or some L-frames to hold it in place.

Cut plywood to match the length and width of your lower cabinet, then add the boards at right angles where the sink will eventually sit. Heavy wood should be used so it’s enough to support the weight for a long period of time.

Nail your wood planks to the wall underneath or the cabinet on each side. Finish by nailing the ends of each board and the center for added support.

Positioning Your New Sink

You’ll probably need an extra hand with this step since farmhouse sinks tend to be quite heavy. Carefully position your new sink into the opening until all of the edges are flush with the counters at the front, back, and sides.

You will also need to add brackets for extra support, so read more about them to find the right ones for your sink. Add some silicone putty around all of the openings to create a tight, waterproof seal near the rim and under the countertops.

Once the silicone is dry, you can install your new faucet and start installing the sink drain. After this step is complete, it’s time to connect the plumbing and give your beautiful new farmhouse sink a try.
