What is Bipolar disorder?

Bipolar disorder is a mental illness. Symptoms can include an extremely uplifted mood called mania. Some people with bipolar disorder only experience mania, while others experience symptoms of both mania and depression.

Managing Bipolar disorder starts with proper treatment, including medication and therapy. But there is more you can do to help yourself on a day-to-day basis. These tips can help you to influence the course of your illness, enabling you to take greater control over your symptoms, to stay well longer, and to quickly recover from any mood episode or relapse.

Symptoms

Symptoms are often activated by a stressful situation. This may take the form of a relationship breakdown; physical, sexual, or emotional misuse; money problems; or the death of a close family member.

Symptoms are thought to be due to changes in the balance of some neurotransmitters in the brain, particularly noradrenaline, serotonin, and dopamine.
